Enlightenment involving understanding of suffering and the achievement of freedom in nirvana are central visions of the Buddhist tradition. Through the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path taught by Buddha, the cycle of rebirth can be broken. Buddha's enlightenment revealed that desire is at the root of suffering and the problems of life. Constant change and elimination of selfish desires are valued principles. There is no being, only becoming. Shrines, temples and monasteries are for meditation, discussion and retreat on all days of the week. Devotion to a Buddha or bodhisattvas as well going on pilgrimages are encouraged. Festivals involve temple visits, alms-giving and offerings at shrines. Primary sub-groups are: Theravada, Mahayana, and Zen.
